Gainesville is located in central Hall County. Interstate 985 passes through the southern part of the city, leading southwest 54 miles to Atlanta.
Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, parts of Gainesville lie along the shore of Lake Lanier. During the 1996 Summer Olympics, Gainesville served as the venue for the rowing and kayaking medal competitions, which were staged on Lake Lanier.
Gainesville Marina located off HWY 53 has served boaters for over 40 years and is home to a very popular lakefront restaurant called “Skogies”. You also have Sunrise Cove marina located in the Flat Creek area of Lake Lanier.
For any off the lake activities, the downtown square is a fun and vibrant place to hang out and grab an amazing bite to eat. The dining options run from very causal to white tablecloth. Gainesville also has a very active arts and theater environment and is home to a new branch of the Atlanta Botanical gardens located off HWY 129 – just north of downtown.
